Different Types of Kitchen Countertops: Pros and Cons

A countertop is an important part of any kitchen design; it must be aesthetically pleasing, but also resistant and durable. We provide you with more information regarding the different types of countertops so that you can choose which is best for your needs.

Quartz Countertop

Popular for the prestige and properties it offers, quartz is made from 94 % ground natural stones and 6 % resin. The resin provides antibacterial and stain-resistant properties, making it a very popular choice. Luxurious and ‒mostly- very versatile, quartz countertops are available in over 300 different colours! Although it is very resistant to acidic products like lemon, vinegar and wine, it is more sensitive to excessive heat.

Dekton Countertop

A new favorite among many design aficionados, Dekton countertops are the epitome of contemporary luxury. Dekton is a material that is resistant to heat, scratches, stains and bacteria. It is less resistant to shocks than quartz, however. This type of countertop is generally chosen for its superior quality and easy maintenance; a real gem in the kitchen.

Granite Countertop

A symbol of class and luxury, this material stands out for its natural beauty. Each slice of granite ‒sourced from various places around the globe- presents its own unique texture, colour and marbling. Moreover, prices differ just as much, depending on its origin and rareness. Very dense and highly resistant to heat, granite countertops must be maintained by applying a sealant every two years or so, in order to protect it from stains.

Porcelain Countertop

Among the different types of available kitchen countertops, porcelain is not as often mentioned, though it does deserve our attention! It is remarkably dense, making it highly resistant to heat and stains. Porcelain can even be used as a backsplash, which is ideal for those who would like to create a continuity with the countertop. Although it is a little bit more expensive than average, its elegance and qualities make it a material of choice for a kitchen.

Stainless-Steel Countertop

Challenge established norms with a stainless-steel countertop and create a modern and professional atmosphere inspired by restaurants. These countertops will allow you to set down even very hot dishes without having to worry; stainless steel is also resistant to both heat and bacteria. This type of kitchen countertop, however, is vulnerable to scratches and must be polished and washed in the same direction as the grain.

Wood & Veneer Countertop

If you are looking for a warm and authentic feel, you can never go wrong with wood; it maintains its popularity year after year. From the most expensive solid wood essence to wood veneer, each option offers its own unique charm and adapts to all different kitchen styles. When it is properly maintained, a wood countertop has anti-bacterial properties. It will, however, be important to apply a sealant to prevent it from becoming porous.

Marble Countertop

Known for its unique marbling and diversified colour palette, marble countertops are very prestigious. However, they are sensitive to stains and acidic products, making it necessary to be more vigilant; the porous nature of marble also requires regular sealant applications. This type of kitchen countertop still remains a timeless choice for people who are looking for refinement.

Concrete Countertop

These countertops have been increasingly popular due to concrete’s resistance to heat and great durability. It does, however, have a tendency to crack and is porous, making it a delicate material that needs to be treated with a sealant every year. It is also very heavy and because of this, it requires special attention during the installation.

Quartzite Countertop

Made from quartz crystals that are naturally bound together, quartzite is a very dense material with a truly unique style. Quartzite countertops combine an appearance that is similar to that of marble, with resistance properties that are close to granite; like granite, it requires the application of a sealant.

Corian Countertop

Made from a blend of synthetic and natural materials, Corian countertops offer infinite possibilities when it comes to colours and design. Without any visible joints, it creates a streamlined and contemporary look, but its resistance to heat and to scratches remains inferior to other high-end options.
